How do you handle a student who freezes during skills practice?

It happens in almost every class. A student who was engaged and paying attention suddenly goes blank the moment you ask them to demonstrate compressions on the manikin. They freeze, laugh nervously, or look at you like they have never heard of CPR before.

How do you handle it? Do you step in immediately or give them a moment? Do you have a specific technique for breaking the tension and getting them back on track? Share what works for you. This one of those skills that nobody usually teaches you in instructor training but makes a huge difference in your classroom.
